M/Y Welsh Falcon
WELSH FALCON, a 53.04 m Motor Yacht built in Sweden and delivered in 1936.
She was in the top 10% by length of all in the world. She is one of 169 motor yachts in the 50-55m size range.
It was the summer of '85
I joined her in Cardiff, Wales, in the Bute Dry Docks, when she was just finishing up her refit. She was devoid of any stores,/provisions.
She could accommodate up to 12 guests, with 9 crew members waiting on their every need.
This was my home for that season in the Mediterranean.
The crew were being paid £20 pounds sterling a month... It was a ridiculous wage. Needless to say, there was a revolving door when it came to the crew.
It was also the days when I was paid £50 Pounds Sterling a month...
Yip £50 is equivalent to £132.60 in today's money or $179.71 USD per month. $5.89 a day... But it wasn't about the money for me. I was being housed, clothed, feed, and got to see some wonderful places.
This sort of money is not happening in this day and age. Starting salary for an entry-level position in the Superyacht Industry now depends a lot, but salaries start around $2500- 3000 USD a month. With tips of $24,000 - $30,000 USD a year additional to your salary, making your income $54,000 -$66,000 USD.

After first dipping my toes in the waters of charter yachts, in the '80 I eventually found myself back at sea again working on cruise ships. This was a great experience for me.
It was a great way to see the world. That is if you weren't stuck in the same cruise cycle of doing the same 4-7 ports every week.
Puerto Rico, St.Thomas, St.Kitts & Nevis, Antigua, St.Lucia, Barbados, St.Maarten, Puerto Rico. Boy, that got old quickly.
Yachting for me meant so much freedom from cruise ships. It was such a grind. ...and it will be for you too.
Knowing that you had to be back on board before 5 pm - Sailing time.
You only had a small window of opportunity to get ashore. There was no chance of going to see what the surrounding places were like. No tours nothing.
